Sophie Clayton - BA (Hons) Technical Effects for Performance
Why LCF?
LCF has a great reputation and is highly regarded in the industry; I had already done a foundation course at LCF and had originally wanted to study on the make-up degree which is one of the only ones in the country. However during my foundation year my work began to move away from make-up and into prosthetics and when I started using plastics and metals in my work I realised that I was more interested in tech effects. That's what is great about a foundation course, I found out so much about myself in that one year and it gave me the chance to decide what I really wanted to do. I felt so much more prepared to do a degree when I finished and I know that my work wouldn't be at the standard it is now, without the foundation course.
Best part of the course?
The variety, I think that tech effects students are in the best position really. Our experience is so broad that we can work anywhere in the industry; costume, prosthetics and puppetry and that's just the beginning. Collaborations with the make-up and costume pathways are excellent. The three pathways complement each other really well and when I've had costume or make-up queries, other students have been really friendly and helpful. I've been taught so many techniques already this year and it's just so much fun.
Most valuable advice you've been given?
If you don't believe in what you're doing, either find a way to believe in it, so that you do have a positive attitude, or find something that you consider is worth your time and energy.
What or who inspires you most?
I have a great design teacher who is excellent to talk through my ideas with. Being surrounded by enthusiastic people on my course is really inspiring because it's always good to get another person's take on an idea. Doing a degree in design for performance has really opened up my spectrum of reference. I'm inspired by all sides of performance whether its film, theatre or street performers in Covent Garden.
Ultimate ambition?
When I graduate I'd love to work in film or television but I'm most excited about theatre at the moment, it's so much more hands on and innovative. I'd love to work at the National Theatre, their plays always push the boundaries and their repertory programme means that they are constantly designing and making new sets and costumes.
What's London life like?
London is so diverse, the mix of cultures is amazing, there's always something going on and it's so spontaneous last weekend I woke up to find it was the Brick Lane curry festival. The cost of living might be high but there are so many things you can do for free, there are all the galleries and museums available and the nightlife is incredible. I love all the different markets and individual shops that you can find if you verge off the beaten track. Having the College next to the Topshop flagship store isn't too mad either!
