Sam El Din - FdA Fashion Retail Branding and Visual Merchandising

Can you tell us a bit about what you were doing before the BA course?

After high school I went to art college in Lebanon where I studied fine art then came to London to study English with art and design at University of the Arts London. Whilst I was preparing for the FdA I worked part time in Liberty and Alexander McQueen as well working in my private studio on my paintings  - I like to mix both the fashion and the art together in my life.

And why did you choose the FdA Fashion Retail Branding and Visual Merchandising course?

I have a real passion for art, design and fashion and style. I have always had a background as an artist since a very young age.

I love window display ideas and concepts as a pieces of art. Also I like to present the product as more than just an item of clothing or accessory but instead a vision for the person who wishes to buy it so that lead me to decide to study Retail Branding and Visual Merchandising at LCF.

What are the facilities like at LCF?

LCF provide many good facilities, such as the virtual learning environment blackboard and study support, open access IT and tutorials and the help with English at the Language Centre .

Did you get involved with any industry projects?

The John Lewis collaborative project was amazing an experience to finish my first year with and at the moment I am working a full time internship with Louis Vuitton in Bond Street.

Can you tell us about your installation with Harrods?

It was my first ever visual design display design on my own and it was such an amazing opportunity so I really want to thank “Billionaire, the Italian couture label, for that.

Someone saw my art work and asked me if I wanted to do a window for Billionaire in Harrods  - I didn’t have to think twice, I went to visit Billionaire in Harrods and saw a jacket from the collection which really inspired me. The colour combinations of blue, white, black and purple were amazing along with the texture of the jacket. The first thing that came in my mind was to make these colours come alive in the whole window. I wanted the colours to drip from the jacket on to the legs of the statue then on to the floor where I painted a piece of art. Both the floor and the statue therefore became part of the same display of the jacket in the window. To create the dripping effect from the jacket to the legs, I used a glue gun and candle wax. After creating this I used the paints inspired by the colour of the jacket to create the display I wanted on the floor. I wanted this work to be a piece of art and to present the garment in an extremely luxurious way to attract all who passed by the window.
