Russell Hindmarch - Fashion Design by Independent Project Mode

1. Which course were you studying on?

I studied Fashion Design through Independent Project Mode.

2. Why this course?

I did my BA in Fashion Design, the research I was involved with had the potential to go deeper into my subject area to an extent I had only scratched the surface on what was potentially more interesting. I decided on the Independent Project pathway as a way to focus on my proposal outside a unit structured course.

3. What did your life involve before this? What were you up to?

I travelled when I was 18 and again in my early twenties, it's a good way to learn where your limits are and what risks you are prepared to take - life is all about calculated and uncalculated risk taking.

4. Lot of research on your course? Were you last minute? Or well prepared?

Well, because my project was a continuation of my findings at BA level I already had a body of work to begin with. The decision was which parts I should take forward and they were the most unfinished elements. People who know me would say I'm a well-organised last minute person.

5. You studied in London. If you had to describe London to an alien in three words what would they be?

Accessible, fun, ergonomic.

6. What does London sound like?

Very multicultural - there are so many different languages spoken in London everywhere you go.

7. What does London taste like?

Brick Lane curries. Yum!

8. Did you have any laughs along the way whilst studying? If so - can you let us know what made you laugh and why?

At college there was one guy called Paul. He would dance around the studio like Tina Turner or do funny impressions of people from the television, he would have me laughing until I wasn't making a noise anymore!

9. Where's the funkiest place you've ever visited? Why so funky?

East London in general - no dress code at all times.

10. What or who inspires you most?

When you walk through London there are blue plaques outside the houses of where the most successful and famous people in history have lived, they're fun to find and make me dream.

11. What's the best feeling in the world?

Relief.

12. Better to have loved and lost or never to have loved at all?

Loved and lost.

13. Salt & Vinegar or Ready Salted?

Good question, erm - smoky bacon.

14. Sunrise or Sunset?

Sunrises said the optimist.

15. What does the future hold?

Deep space travel, renewable energy sources, discovery and conservation of rare animals, climate and environmental change, new and brave art and art forms - all with time to spare for family.
