Precious Oshungbure - BA (Hons) Fashion Media (Part time)
So Precious tell us about yourself.
I'm Precious Oshungbure. I'm 19 years old, and I'm currently studying the part time BA (Hons) Fashion Media, and I'm in my first year. It's quite an exciting experience. It's different to doing my A-Levels - there's much more freedom here at the university.
And what made you want to study this course in particular?
Well I originally applied for the BA in Fashion Journalism - but unfortunately I didn't get a place on that course, so the next closest thing in terms of what I wanted to study was this degree. As I am interested in the promotion of fashion. And so I applied direct to the college and got a place on this course.
Could you could give us an example of a highlight of the course so far - and an example of a project or an assignment that you have undertaken?
Well on the course we basically look at different types of media. We look at images in magazines for examples and discuss how fashion is promoted and perceived. And also in film, and on television. For example we looked at the programme Desperate Housewives, and looked at how the characters hair and fashion sense relates to their character and personality. That was interesting. We also had Ben de Lisi - who came in last week to give a talk - and it was very interesting to listen to him.
So you're interested in hearing people from the industry talk about their experience?
Yes it helps a lot.
So - you're studying part time at the moment. Does that mean that you are working?
I am looking for work at the moment, maybe something in fashion retail. Hopefully something during the daytime. There are lots of opportunities to find this type of work in London. I'm just trying to find the right type of work for me.
Give us an example of your typical college week.
Well it changes from term to term. Like this term, we don't have to come into college that often, but we have a lot of research to do. Whereas next term we will have to come in about three times per week. Including Saturdays.
How do you find that?
It's not too bad actually! Because I don't have to get up early in the week! Out of hours study is fine, the hours suit me really well, and fit in with my everyday life. I'm living at home at the moment. So I'm getting help from home. I live in Ilford in East London. I'm a Londoner born and bred.
What's your style? Tell us something about that.
Well I kind of go for my own style. I try not to follow everything that's out there in terms of fashion. I make my own clothes, and I try to incorporate what I see out there in to my own style. And make it kind of 'me' - and change stuff to suit my own look.
By 'out there' - Do you mean you get your inspiration from the streets?
No. Mainly from fashion shows and from style magazines. I read Vogue a lot for example.
Do you go clubbing?
Not really. Sometimes. But not really a big clubber.
What do you like about London?
I suppose I really like shopping best! I love the variety of shops in London. And of course I love going to restaurants and things like that.
Your favourite food?
It's got to be pizza!
And your favourite drink?
Try not to drink too much! But I guess Bacardi Breezer.
What about music?
R&B, Hip Hop. And gospel - I sing in church, so I like gospel music a lot. And a bit of jazz.
What does London sound like?
I just think of noise, everything moving so fast - cars and buses, and just lots and lots of noise! But I like being around a noisy environment. That's one of the reasons why I stayed here in London. I couldn't live in a small town. I would just find it too quiet. You get used to the noise if you live here.
What does London smell like?
(Laughs) I don't know! A variety of all sorts of things! People. It smells a lot of a lot of different people!
Ready Salted or Salt & Vinegar?
Neither. Prawn Cocktail.
TV Shows?
I like reality TV shows like Americas Next Top Model and Project Catwalk - things like that. Not really Big Brother - I used to you, but not any more. I'm not sure I'd like to be in a reality TV show - I guess if it made me famous it might be OK!
What about the mixture of people on the course. Is it as you expected?
There are loads of different ages, and people from different countries, which is great. I think it's good to be around different types of people. There could be more boys on the course - that's one thing that you have to get used to. But I'm really happy to be here at LCF and I find it really inspiring. I've always wanted to study fashion, and so I'm really happy that I'm on this course. I think it's a really great opportunity for me to study here. One of my friends came from the same secondary school as me, and we're both first years on the course - so it's great for me to have someone there that I know, who is also interested in this type of course.
What would you like to do after you've completed the course?
At the moment I think I'd like to try and get an internship. So I can get as much work experience as possible, maybe while I'm studying. And then afterwards, I think I'd like to be a stylist, and work on different shows. I do some styling in my own time at the moment, on friends and family and such. I'd like to work as a stylist on different types of photo-shoots. I'm using this time to decide, and hopefully in the future I'd like to have my own business. Maybe in the next ten years!
Well - good luck!
