Kendra Ayling - Foundation Degree Fashion Marketing and Promotion (Online Delivery)

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you were doing before this course.

I'm currently work for a retail and fashion recruitment magazine called The Appointment as an Account Manager.

Why did you choose to study at LCF?

I chose LCF because the University of the Arts is known for being the best higher education facility in London, and living in North London this gives me great access all of their facilities, and the credibility of studying at The London College of Fashion!

Why did you choose this particular degree?

I chose the Foundation Degree Fashion Marketing and Promotion (Online Delivery) firstly because it is an online course and I currently work 40 hours a week, so it suits my timetable perfectly. I chose Fashion Marketing and I want to be able to grow in my current job and understand what my clients need a little better, and because ideally, I'd like to go into Fashion PR when I finish my degree.

Can you tell us something about particular projects you have worked on - and which you have enjoyed the most so far?

We're currently putting together a marketing plan for a new range of jeans. We get to pick from four potential brands and have complete creative freedom as to how we would market their jeans - it's great fun! It also gives you an insight into just how much money people spend on advertising and trying to get people to buy their products, it's a crazy amount!

The course is run online. How does this tie in with the rest of your life - and how many hours (on average) to you study per week?

It fits in really well, I work 40 hours a week and try and get at least 20 hours a week in or reading, writing and researching. It's been touch and go (especially when your friends are off to the pub after work!) but you find a good balance after the first few weeks and I still have plenty of time to go out and have fun - which is the most important thing.

How do you get your assignments? And how are you assessed?

We study 2 projects a term and get given a brief at the beginning for our final project, and 10 mini-assignments each week leading up to the big deadline. These all help getting information and knowledge against the final piece, and we get each work's week on a Friday evening, and hand it in the following Friday. We're assessed against a set of criteria which we get given at the beginning of the project, so we know what we have to aim for.

How do you find working with your fellow students online?

It's great! We have bi-weekly chat sessions with our tutors in a big group online, and discussion boards we can talk about our projects and other issues on. Plus, we're all friends on Facebook which means we're always in touch and get to know each other as friends too!

What do you like to read?

Mostly magazines such as Drapers, Vogue, Fruits and ID. I'm reading a book about Coca Cola at the moment and the things they get up to out of the public eye - very interesting!

Any other interests?

I love going out around London (normally resulting in shopping!) and just seeing the sights, it's such a great city and easy to take advantage of.
