Emma Lamb - FdA Fashion Marketing & Promotion (Online Delivery)
Tell us a little bit about yourself Emma
I started studying fashion when I was 23. Previously I had studied business as I was unsure what career direction I would take. Fashion has always been a great interest of mine, although I never thought there would be a course on Fashion Marketing and Promotion. I started my studies at University College for the Creative Arts (UCCA) and then transferred to the London College of Fashion.
Why did you choose to study at LCF?
I was relocating and I didn't want that to interfere with my studies, I decided to transfer to online studying which gave complete flexibility.
Why did you choose this particular degree?
I had always wanted to work in fashion and was interested in one of three areas, PR, Event Management or an Editorial role. This course covered all areas that I am interested in and I can now specialise in a subject of my choosing for my third and final year
Can you tell us something about particular projects you have worked on - and which you have enjoyed the most so far?
The projects have been varied, so you get a good grounding in many fashion disciplines.
One of my favourite projects was a work based learning project with global make up brand Estee Lauder. This was a fantastic opportunity to show a leading brand your potential.
LCF has many high profile contacts and this is something that can be utilised if you are dedicated and ambitious.
It is good to have examples of your work to show prospective employers where your skills and abilities lie.
The course is run online. How does this tie in with the rest of your life - and how many hours (on average) do you study per week?
You will need to be dedicated to complete this course; I need to work whilst studying so meticulous planning is essential. I would not recommend working more than 24 hours per week, unless you don't mind studying every weekend. I like to give myself a day off during the week and working part time allows this. On average I probably study between 20 and 30 hours per week.
How do you get your assignments? And how are you assessed?
Assignments are sent to the assignments folder on blackboard. We are sent an e-mail to advise us of this and the briefing and week's tasks will be found there.
Assessment is based on the unit learning outcomes, which are described at the beginning of each brief. Constantly referring to these will enable you to structure your studies and reach the required outcomes.
Research is essential in producing a final piece of work, although this does not form part of your final piece but it will make a large contribution. There will be help with your studies; however you will be expected to initiate most of your online learning. The more you do, the more you will get back.
Did you receive any financial help towards the cost of the course? Can you tell us about this if you have?
Unfortunately I only received a fraction of a loan for my tuition fees; it really does depend on your circumstances. I am aware there is now more funding available for students who wish to study online.
Do you feel that 'miss out' in any way not studying in London and in college?
I was worried I would miss out; however you are still very much involved with the college if you choose to be. Just because you study outside of the college does not mean you have to miss out completely, you are still invited to all student events and are entitled to use the college facilities, just like any full time student attending the college.
The online group of students I have studied with this year have been very friendly and you will all meet with each other during enrolment and an induction, where you will hopefully form new relationships. You will be encouraged to participate in group discussions and team building sessions.
What do you like to read?
I would like a career in Fashion Journalism, PR or Event Management so any fashion periodicals, swiftly followed up by Drapers to supplement my studies!
Any other interests?
