Alix Hayhurst - BA (Hons) Fashion Promotion

Alix Hayhurst graduated in 2011 from BA Fashion Promotion (now BA Fashion Journalism). She spoke to us in her second year and told us about the course.

Hi Alix, can you tell us a bit about what you were doing before coming to LCF?

Before I moved to London for University, I attended Brockenhurst College in the New Forest which I thoroughly enjoyed, amazing facilities and brilliant lecturers. I studied Media BTEC with an A Level in Photography and graduated with three A's and a B which I am extremely proud of.

Why did you want to study fashion journalism?

I chose to study it because of my interest in the media, it fascinates me how it controls the world we live in, and almost everything we do is influenced by something we've seen or heard in the media. I thought fashion would give it an interesting twist and it's an industry that is continually expanding and heavily influenced by the media.

How have you found the course so far?

Honestly I've had my issues with the course and questioned whether it was for me in the first year, but the second year has really made up my mind for me and I have a much better idea of what I want to do.

How much theory work are you doing on the course? Is it a good balance between theory and practical work?

I find all terms are predominantly practical, if I was to give a percentage I'd say 70% Practical and 30% Theory, which I think is a great balance. I learn a lot better when I'm doing, so for me this balance of theory and practical is perfect!

How are you taught on the course? Are there a lot or lectures or is it a mix of smaller tutorials and workshops?

First term is the most hectic, lectures everyday, lots of deadlines, lots of stress but it's all over quite quickly. Second term is group work which can be highly stressful but if you've got a good group that work well together and get on with it then it's quite enjoyable believe it or not, I've had great fun the last two years doing group work, made some good friends and it gives you a chance to see whose worth knowing.

Third term is always fun and goes very quickly, the summer sun helps a lot so we can chill with a beer outside after or in between lectures.

You recently completed some 'Vox Pops' during LCF's MA graduate season. How did you find doing these? What was it like interviewing industry and music stars?

Loved it! I really enjoyed it, I thought I'd be really uncomfortable interviewing industry stars but once I got the swing of it, it was a breeze! Had great fun meeting everyone. Harold Tillman and Jane Shepherdson were two favourites of mine...Harold for his charm and excellence and Jane because she was just so sweet and she is an idol of mine, what she did with Topshop was phenomenal and she just doesn't get enough praise in my opinion.

Have you had any other industry experience on your course?

Currently I am interning at M&C Saatchi for seven weeks, which has been absolutely fantastic so far. I'm based in the TV department and in my first week I accompanied producers on television adverts, web adverts and radio adverts, as well as assisting on the editing of the new Conservative campaign viral, then I did a voiceover for a television advert.. It's an endless list and I'm having a blast!

Who or what inspires you most?

London and my lovely Mummy.

The picture of Alix above was taken by Rankin during the 2009 RankinLive campaign

Alix tells us what it was like being shot by a famous photographer:

Rankin was looking for people, aged 13 and over, who had a distinctive style, sense of British eccentricity, and enthusiasm. The lucky participants were invited to the Rankin Live exhibition at London's Truman Brewery in August to sit for their personal shoot. The portraits produced on the day were hung as part of the ever-changing exhibition and uploaded online to the Rankin Live website. It was so much fun meeting him, seeing his live exhibition in action and his retrospective of work over the past 22 years.
