Research Interests
My research is centred on my practice as a painter. Recent work takes the form of large scale papercuts which have been both digitally collaged and intricately hand cut, as well as ornately decorated ceramic vessels. In addition I have taken my ideas into glass. My research is centred on the representation of the female figure within a contemporary context. The drawing of the figure implies a semi – permeable membrane through which anxieties and experience travel. The female figure motif is juxtaposed with alternative historical representations enveloped by colour, pattern, drapery and contemporary motifs such as computer icons and domestic elements. The work is informed by the decorative and applied arts. Drawing is central to my practice as a thinking process through which I build an 'archive' of usable visual imagery, both hand drawn and digital. The working methodology of collage is used throughout her practice.
Current Research
At LCF I lead on issues relating to drawing within research and the curriculum. As part of this role I have established the Forum for Drawing hub which holds an ongoing programme of presentations by research practitioners for whom drawing plays a pivotal role in their practice.
Recent exhibitions which I have conceived and curated for LCF include 'Drawing & the Body’ KG52 Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden 2011 realised in collaboration with The Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås and ‘When Photography & Drawing Meet Fashion’ at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University China in 2008. Both exhibitions included work by artists and designers from LCF. The exhibitions sought to reveal the diverse role that drawing plays within creative practice.
